Helena Freitas is Full Professor of Biodiversity and Ecology at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra since 2003, and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity Safeguard for Sustainable Development since 2014. She has dedicated much of her scientific and personal activity to the conservation of biodiversity – the foundation of ecological systems. Ecosystems provide a wide range of goods and services essential to humanity, sustaining life on Earth, and their conservation require knowledge and political action in favor of a wiser management of the Earth’s natural resources.
She is the coordinator of the Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet and Focal Point of Portugal for IPBES – Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem. She is also the Director of Serralves Park.
